@oilfire30: For America it's a holiday that commemorates the time a bunch of people Native to the New World helped the Pilgrims from the Old World set up their crops and build structures so they could survive the harsh winter.
This act of kindness was repaid with murder and killings, also Iron Maiden wrote a song about it.

@oilfire30: That depends on which Thanksgiving you're referring to. The "First Thanksgiving" refers to a three-day feast between the Pilgrims of Plymouth Rock, a group of austere religious outsiders who emigrated to a new continent that they didn't know how to survive on; and a tribe of locals who took pity on them and helped them to survive their first winter.

Though most Americans are unaware of it, the holiday they celebrate every November is actually a much more recent creation. The holiday was created during the Lincoln administration in the 1800s specifically as a federal holiday to occur on the third Thursday in November in celebration of a successful harvest. Prior to the government making it a formal holiday, many areas already had their own harvest celebrations around the same time.

What does all this mean? Around Thanksgiving time every year, you'll hear a lot of talk about how evil it is to celebrate Thanksgiving, as it whitewashes over European settlers eventual destruction of Native American's civilizations and culture. Except the "First Thanksgiving" is largely a recent construct and has little to do with the creation of the actual holiday. So, in a humorous twist, the holiday is only "evil" because of people's attempts to give it legitimacy.
